Worn before

Almost everything else in a wardrobe eventually gets outgrown, outworn, or simply stopped wearing. Jewelry rarely does. It doesn't hold a season, doesn't need a size adjustment most years, doesn't go out the way a cut or a colour can. Which makes it strange that it's often the piece we ask the fewest questions of. A ring can look identical whether the gold inside it was dug out of new ground last year or has already lived a dozen lives on someone else's hand.

That second option isn't a compromise. Recycled gold and silver behave exactly like the new kind: same weight, same shine, same way of ageing into something better. The only real difference is what happens before it reaches you: nothing mined, nothing new, considerably less asked of the ground.

Two London studios make the case well. Amadeus is B Corp certified and handmade throughout from recycled gold and silver, with a particular gift for hand-sourcing vintage pearls and gemstones rather than buying new. Carolina de Barros casts everything itself, using the lost-wax method (sculpted first, not stamped) in recycled sterling silver, made to order rather than stocked.

Necklaces: pearls and details

Amadeus hand-sources its pearls from vintage stock, so the Laura Mixed Gold Chain and Pearl Necklace is the perfect half and half: lustrous vintage pearls set against a high-polished gold chain. It's simple enough to wear alone and easy to layer under anything else. Carolina de Barros's Velo Choker takes the same material and gives it a sculptural, contemporary twist — freshwater pearls strung softly, broken up by the studio's signature folded-fabric form. Both are subtle and timeless: pieces that can elevate an everyday outfit or blend into something dressier.

Carolina de Barros's Dobra Necklace is a made-to-order statement piece: metal folded and twisted into an art form, with a single pearl nestled within. Set it against a plain canvas (a black cashmere knit, a slip dress, a camisole) and let it be the one jewel making the statement. Amadeus's Daphne Gold Necklace with Pearl Carabiner Lock plays the same trick from the other direction: a plain gold chain that gives away its detail only at the clasp, where a scatter of small vintage pearls does the talking. Style it with a white button-down, layer it with chains of different lengths, or just let it sit at whatever neckline you're already wearing.

Rings: everyday and playful

The ring I put on every morning without thinking has to earn the word timeless, and both of these do. Carolina de Barros's Maresia Ring takes its name from the Portuguese for salt air: corroded-looking, asymmetric, cast to look like something the sea has already worn smooth. The Enlace Ring is the elegant, balanced one: a plain interlocking band, cast in the same recycled silver, built to go with everything else. These are the rings you keep in a dish by the bathroom sink or the door, knowing they'll go with pretty much anything you put on.

Rings are also where I let myself have fun, especially against a plain outfit. The Bubble Pink Quartz Gold Ring sets a vintage rose quartz (sourced second-hand rather than newly mined) into a rounded gold setting, adjustable enough to move between fingers. I've had a soft spot for a ring that catches the light ever since I watched my piano teacher's ring flash across the keys when I was eight. The Amadeus ring is the same, the round stone catching the light every time your hand moves, and finding it here feels like a small full-circle moment. The Bow Ring is for the inner child: a ring literally tied in a bow, gold vermeil, smooth and fully adjustable. If there's one ring here that will make you smile every time you look down, it's this one.

Earrings: mismatched and classic

Carolina de Barros makes a habit of pairs that don't match on purpose, which puts them right in step with where earrings actually are right now. The Ipê Earrings take their texture from the bark of the Brazilian tree they're named for: one ridged silver form, one baroque pearl, worn as a set that's asymmetric by design. The Trama Earrings push the idea further: one ear in crinkled, pressed-fabric silver, the other a thread of small freshwater pearls, each earring a different piece of the same idea. It's the kind of detail people only clock on the second look.

Side note: you can build the mismatched look with your own earring collection too. Mix by size, shape or metal, but keep one thing consistent to tie the pair together; Carolina de Barros's own mismatched sets are a good template to study.

For the days that call for something simpler: the Lilly Twisted Rectangular Gold Hoop Earrings are exactly the everyday hoop they sound like, recycled silver under a thick layer of recycled gold. The Venus Gold Hoop Earrings with Keshi Pearl Charm add a single small pearl to the same basic shape: barely there, but enough to tell the two apart.

Bracelets: sculptural and earthy

Carolina de Barros treats the bracelet as the most sculptural piece in the range. The Amassado Cuff is cast to look crumpled: folded metal caught mid-motion, more artefact than accessory. The Lagoa Bracelet, named for the Portuguese word for lagoon, takes the opposite shape: fluid and wave-like, cast to catch light the way water does. Either one is really a piece on its own, too much presence to share a wrist with much else.

Amadeus closes the range with something more talismanic. The Luna Moonstone Gold Chain Bracelet links a handful of vintage moonstones along a dainty recycled gold chain, the kind of piece that reads as jewelry and a small good-luck charm at once. The Arizona Jasper Bracelet does the same in warmer, earthier tones: a mottled jasper stone set along the same fine gold chain.

A final word

Neither studio is trying to be fine jewelry, and neither is pretending to be costume. They sit in the honest middle: made well enough to outlast the pieces they're bought to go with, priced like something you actually buy rather than something you're given once. The gold and silver were already gold and silver before they reached either studio. They still are now. That's the whole case.
